Today’s post features sample architectural exterior building photos of The Harold Washington Social Security Government Building Renovation in Chicago. Our client, an architectural commercial construction company, requested building photography at multiple project locations of commercial buildings around Chicago and the suburbs showcasing past projects for the client’s marketing and construction portfolio of images for business.

The Harold Washington Social Security Center is located in the West Loop of Chicago. The headquarters for SSA’s Chicago regional office was built in 1975. The government building recently underwent a renovation. The 10-story building is made of composite steel, a reinforced concrete structural frame clad in pre-cast concrete panels, and a glass and spandrel curtain wall. The construction team in charge of the concrete building with new modern glass renovation Chicago construction project are Jacobs Ryan Associates Landscape Architects, Bergland Construction, and Harmon Inc.

The modernized, new Harold Washington Social Security Government Building occupies one city block of Chicago’s West Loop. City of Chicago Harold Washington Social Security Government building features public art at the building’s entrance. A giant, 101-foot-tall, outdoor steel sculpture baseball bat named Batcolumn (or Bat Column) by artist Claes Oldenburg.

Chicago’s skyscrapers, chimney stacks, neoclassical columns, steel bridge cross-bracing and construction cranes inspired the design of Claes Oldenburg’s heroic- scaled, lattice-shell baseball bat. On observing Chicago’s flat terrain, the Swedish-born artist once commented, “the real art here is architecture, or anything that really stands up.” Oldenburg’s Batcolumn demonstrates the artist’s fascination with scale and the changes in the significance of everyday objects when they are enlarged to monumental proportions. Like all of Oldenburg’s monuments, Batcolumn combines a humorous and irreverent attitude toward popular objects with meticulous construction details and handling of scale and proportion. It can alternately be seen as a reference to historical monumental columns, a salute to the American institution of baseball or a tribute to the steel industry.  Source, The Chicago Public Art Guide

As Chicago commercial architectural photographers, it was easy to become artistically inspired while photographing the Bienen School of Music & Center building’s modern building’s eye-catching, dynamic architecture and lakefront natural setting.  The contemporary building has a shooting Z-shaped mass representative of a nautical lines of a ship.  The impressive architecturally designed building defines the eastern edge of the arts building, make sharp “z” shaped turning junctions from east turning to the west, sharply edging away from Lake Michigan. A large, light-filled atrium divides the university’s new additional from the original music building to create a majestic, new main entry and hall gathering space. With glass and metal architectural building elements, the new building’s architecture offers clear views on to the lake and Chicago skyline down shore. Awarded LEED Gold status, the building offers a variety of innovative features including a double-skin facade of iron and glass cladding, and a grey water system. All spaces met enormous acoustical and sound requirements, including the opera rehearsal room and choral recital. Our campus photography shoot included a couple of photographed interior theater photography. Capture photography of their Construction Company’s best architectural projects and commercial buildings. An incredible list of locations to photograph, we were impressed upon reviewing the list of 15 buildings to photograph all remarkably constructed and engineered by the Construction Company, so we simply couldn’t wait to get started.  For each exterior building photo shoot, our client’s primary shoot desires were to showcase each building as one attention grabbing image for the company’s impressive construction marketing portfolio and feature those 15 best shots and images of the buildings as framed prints on the walls of their office.  The company’s new Chicago headquarters had blank walls, so they desired to showcase past construction projects as wall art through the hallways, boardroom, and executive staff members offices. Although only one final shot was requested, we couldn’t resist photographing this building from multiple angles, highlighting the structure’s unbelievable architecture.

This Northwestern University Bienen School of Music & Center For Musical Arts LEED Building  Photography Construction Project was 1 building out of a 15 buildings within the entire photography project.  Miller + Miller Photography is looking forward to photographing all of the Construction Company client’s showcase Commercial Buildings and Architecture over the next couple of years… not only just in Chicago, also traveling Nationwide.
