South Loop Chicago Skyline

We couldn’t resist capturing a couple of South Loop Chicago Skyline Photos during our photo client’s Chicago architectural photography shoot at the South Loop’s newest mega hotel Marriott Marquis Chicago.  The high-rise hotel skyscraper recently finished construction at the end of 2017 and accents the south loop with its blue-tinted steel & glass skyscraper building.  View photos & all blog posts related to the Marriott Marquis hotel and McCormick Square Development area in Chicago’s South Loop.

This short blog post features two photos of the south view of Chicago’s Skyline.  As Chicago photographers with ten years of professional architectural photography experience, we have captured countless Chicago skyline photography angles and photographed from nearly each and every panoramic point around the City of Chicago’s beautiful skyline. Development in the South Loop real estate corridor have undergone a development boom and tremendous growth over the past 10 years.  This massive growth has helped to enhance the panoramic Southern photo views of the Chicago skyline when photographed from the South Loop area.

The South Loop Chicago area is located just south of Chicago’s business area called the Loop.  The South Loop region stretches from Congress Parkway at the Northern tip of the Printer’s Row neighborhood and stretching south from the southern point of Grant Park, following along the park east to Museum Campus.  The Museum Campus’s historical and architectural iconic buildings of the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium and Soldier Field are situated along the scenic lakefront of Lake Michigan.  To the east on a peninsula stretching out over the water of Lake Michigan is Northerly Island.  This manmade peninsula is a popular attraction in the South Loop sought out by nature lovers exploring the new 91-acre living ecosystem of Northerly Island, Burnham Harbor yachting, boating, sports and music fans. Additional South Loop’s historical sites include Motor Row District along South Michigan Avenue and the Prairie Avenue District “Millionaire’s Row” streets lined with mansions of Chicago’s most wealthy elite during the end of the 19th century. The southern section of the South Loop is frequented by travelers for business and pleasure attending hotel conferences, expos, meetings, and events in the South Loop at McCormick Place, the largest convention center in the country.   The western edges of the South Loop is the Chicago River and southern border is the I-55 Stevenson Expressway.

We travel nationwide for architectural photography projects, and after visiting nearly every state in the US, the Chicago skyline in our opinion is one of the most impressive skylines in the world.  For these South Loop Chicago skyline photos, the image angles were one-of-a-kind, and photographed without a drone. Our shoot provided for an over the rooftop building position & bird’s-eye aerial photography view looking north over the architecture and real estate in the South Loop.

GT Prime Chicago steakhouse

This featured architectural photography project was at GT Prime Chicago. Chicago’s newest, edgy-chic restaurant steakhouse. GT Prime is a modern interpretation of the classic Chicago steakhouse restaurant and is located at 707 N Wells Street in Chicago’s bustling River North neighborhood.

Our architectural photography client was appointed as a lighting specialist during construction of the new River North restaurant. Marketing hired Miller + Miller Architectural Photography to photograph the GT Prime building exterior facade. Our photography focus was to capture the exterior photos of the building with a focus on the lighting and ambiance it provides. Additionally, for this exterior Chicago photography building project, the photography shoot was to include photographs of the restaurant building’s front door, and photographed across the street with a focus in on the facade captured during the late afternoon into the evening lighting hours. We planned for our photography shoot of the restaurant building to begin in the early evening, to capture both sunset dusk and night after dark photos.

Photographing the Chicago restaurant storefront building at night not only produces dramatic images but also fulfilled the client’s need to focus in on their lighting product.  The GT Prime restaurant photo shoot was photographed during different times of the day, providing professional marketing images for our client who was looking to showcase their lighting product from the evening’s golden hour until after dark.  Most important for this photography client, was ensuring our photos visually showcased through photographs the lighting casting beams of light along the valance of the exterior elevation of the building. Using our 10+ years of commercial photographer expertise, knowledge and photographic technical ability, our professional architectural photos of the building illustrate how the light grazes onto the wood paneled walls of GT Prime adding drama to the Chicago storefront of the restaurant’s front doors & entryway. Appointing eye-catching lighting was a genius part of the restaurant’s construction.  The unique way the dramatic lighting at the GT Prime Chicago restaurant was added into the building’s construction provide drama, while impressing the eye of potential future patrons driving, or walking out front of the restaurant location on Wells between Huron and Superior streets.

GT Prime Chicago Steakhouse www.gtprimerestaurant.com features cocktails & wines, mixed grill options, and creative small plates. With an emphasis on sourcing from local farms and cuisine highlighted by seasonal Ingredients, GT Prime was prominently ranked recently as a Top 50 Steakhouses in America. The Boka Restaurant Group and Executive Chef/Partner Giuseppe Tentori have curated a meat-centric menu indicative of Giuseppe’s signature sharable plates at his sister restaurant, GT Fish & Oyster. While many restaurants forgo specialty lighting design due to budget constraints, GT Prime and Boka Restaurant Group consistently make restaurant lighting a high priority understanding the importance quality lighting providing for not only lavish room lamp decoration for the high-end restaurant’s eye-catching atmosphere, nonetheless still maintaining a balanced focus on comfort and ambiance. Balancing functional illumination, the Chicago Tribune has complimented GT Prime as “dramatically lit”!  The impressive GT Prime restaurant is designed by Karen Herold of Studio K Creative. The distinctive and memorable restaurant design features Karen’s signature interior design esthetic that is both timeless and eclectic. Boka Restaurant Group selected LG Construction Development Group founded by Brian Goldberg and Marc Lifshin to complete the restaurant real estate development and build the two-story, 5,600 square foot luxury restaurant.  Architecture of the GT Prime restaurant is by Jonathon Splitt Architects Ltd. Exterior LED lighting by Tempo LLC Industries.

Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel Photos

The Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile, formerly named the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower, opened in 2002 in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.  As a professional architectural photographer in Chicago with an array of quality, pro lenses purchased specifically for photographing architecture, Miller + Miller Photography team was looking forward to the challenge of photographing the Sofitel and its unique architecture.  As a Chicago Hotel Photographer team, photographing the modern Chicago hotel building was yes a challenge, but has been known to be somewhat difficult for the novice photographer, due to not only the skyscraper’s height but proximity to its neighboring, soaring Chicago buildings adjacent.

The Sofitel Hotel’s exterior building shape is a triangular prism sitting on a square piece of land, with acute angles cutting into the air like the prow of a majestic ship.  Located in the historic district of Chicago crowded with perpendicular skyscrapers, the challenge was to photograph this modern luxury hotel from the street level, in a way that captures the building both flattering to the eye and imagination.  All accomplished with our 10+ years of experience, strategy, and architectural specialty, professional photography lenses.  For one of the images, we were able to include in one photograph both the Sofitel and the Waldorf Astoria hotel skyscrapers together, in one photographed shot.  A somewhat tricky shot to compose with the two hotel’s locations blocks away from one another.

The impressive Sofitel was architecturally designed by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier.  Photos of the southern façade of the hotel building projects into the sky with a unique knifelike edge extending 33 feet over the East Chestnut Street sidewalk. The iconic building design has been honored within a list of America’s Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.  The unique hotel design is a 32-floor prism of glass featuring stunning views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.  A modern, Chicago luxury hotel skyscraper building, the Sofitel’s Gold Coast neighborhood boasts several hospitality establishments and luxury hotels.  The hotel’s downtown area is steps from dynamic shopping, restaurants, nightlife and museums.  A popular area of Chicago for travelers & tourists to stay downtown, the Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile hotel’s prime location is minutes away from the Magnificent Mile, Millennium Park, Navy Pier and more iconic parts of our famous Windy City.
